Our History

Ark Eden is a leading permaculture education project located in an isolated valley in the foothills on Mui Wo, Lantau Island, Hong Kong.

It is dedicated to the principles of permaculture - repairing a connection and respect for the natural environment through educational workshops and restorative projects that create a shift in the mindset and habits of people towards sustainability.

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a design system creating consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs.

It can provide solutions to some of the toughest ecological and economic challenges we face today.

Permaculture can be modified and applied to both urban and rural settings so is very relevant in its application for Hong Kong.

It draws together the diverse skills and ways of living which need to be rediscovered and developed to empower us to move from being dependent consumers to independent providers.

Why Permaculture?

In 2011 Jenny attended the first Permaculture Design Certificate(PDC) course that ran in Hong Kong. She was hooked straight away and in 2012 Ark Eden hosted its first PDC.

Ark Eden has chosen permaculture as its main focus as permaculture can provide solutions to some of the toughest ecological, social and economic challenges we face today.

Permaculture is grounded in three solid ethics – care for the people – care for the environment – and a fair share for all and are the ethics shared by all permaculture communities including Ark Eden.

Site Ecology

Jenny began planting trees in Hong Kong over 25 years ago – several years after she came to live here. At one point she got so frustrated with them all burning down again that she planted behind a fire-station so the firemen could put out the trees if they caught fire. Then, with the help of the Government she started planting trees on the hillsides of the valley in which she lived and to date 34,000 native trees of 110 species have been planted by local volunteers and students.
